A useful unit, slightly overpriced in the current patch but well worth it if you can afford it. Despite the carrier only carrying one squadron, fighters and bombers are both powerful units in their own right. Fighters are useful in taking out bombers, but also in shredding LRMs, trade ships, and other lightly armored craft. Bombers can devastate orbital structures, and when grouped in large numbers are feared for their ability to wipe out capitol ships in one or two passes. The key with carriers is to remember to build a lot of them, as strike craft die rather fast when the enemy has flaks available.
Carriers, due to the free replacement of fighters, also make very effective raiders -- take a fleet of them on a tour through the enemy back areas, and sneer as your foes try to chase you down! You fighters will rend their strike craft, kill their trade craft -- gaining you credits! -- and your bombers will enjoy destroying their buildings. Just remember to only jump one system at a time -- carriers will not, by default, launch fighters when they are just "passing through" a system. |
